One of our favorite rewards to this advocacy is learning about the various incredible opportunities that arts organizations are developing with families in mind. One organization, Waterwell, decided to take the initiatives a step further and recognize the power of family-inclusion and its ability to connect to community.
This memorial day weekend, Waterwell is hosting “Fleet Week Follies,” which the event page describes as “A Festival of Music, Food + Family Activities for Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, and Veteran service members, and their families + caregivers” – woah. This event is free for military attendees and their families and caregivers! This event is a prime example of how access in cost can show care for specific members of our community – in this case, members who serve in the military. For many, time with their family is sacrificed so that they can fulfill their duties, and Waterwell has found a way to celebrate them while inviting their families into the heartbeat of the event.
“Waterwell is bringing together New York’s finest performers to create a one-day festival of unforgettable music, food, and family activities.” – Fleet Week Follies Event Page
As if that weren’t enough, the show is set to feature Tony-nominees Andrew Rannells and Celia Keenan-Bolger. The site promises “stars of stage, screen, and music will not only be putting on a show, they’ll be hanging out and hosting for all the current and former service members.” It was inspired by Stage Door Canteen, which operated in the Broadway Theatre District to serve military during World War II.
Activities are available for the whole family, with everything from Sesame Street activities for kids to happy hour for adults to entertainment for everyone. If you’re a military family, be sure to register! Civilians are also welcome to sign up for access as long as there is space. Happy Memorial Day, everyone – to you and all of yours, and huge thank you to the artists at Waterwell who are making art and entertainment that allows everyone to celebrate together.
