The Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) Women+ in Theatre Committee is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Parent Artist Advocacy League (PAAL) to supply and facilitate our Family Room at SETC’s upcoming convention in Louisville, KY, February 26–March 1, 2020, at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
The Women+ in Theatre (W+iT) Family Room is designed to support parent artists by making the SETC convention more accessible to individuals who are pregnant, nursing, or traveling with children. While childcare services are not included, the Family Room does provide:
- A dedicated space with a privacy screen for nursing parents to breastfeed or pump.
- A small mini-refrigerator for breastmilk storage.
- A child-friendly play space with toys and books (supervision required).
- A Pack N Play and a non-enclosed mat (supervision required).
- A changing table with assorted-size diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and disposal can.
As current W+iT Committee chair Rowen Haigh says, “The Family Room is about creating equitable access for parent artists to attend the SETC convention. We want to show you that you’re welcome and that you’re a valued member of SETC. We are extremely grateful to PAAL for helping to organize and sponsor this resource!”
PAAL founder Rachel Spencer Hewitt adds, “Providing a Family Room is a great step for SETC—it could make the difference between someone being able to attend the convention or not. This is exactly the type of action that PAAL seeks to support and normalize in the arts and media.”
The partnership with PAAL also ensures that SETC is following best practices in terms of parent and caregiver support. As Spencer Hewitt says, “Actively serving parent artists is new territory for a lot of organizations. That’s why this partnership model works so well—PAAL is able to provide the knowledge base and resources, and the W+iT Committee is able to thread those into the existing structure of SETC.”
The SETC Family Room will be open during the annual convention at the following times in room LO 25 at the Kentucky International Convention Center (KICC):
- Wednesday, February 26, 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
- Thursday, February 27, 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
- Friday, February 28, 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, February 29, 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Children should be with a parent, guardian, or caregiver at all times and locations during the SETC convention, including when in the Family Room.
As part of the W+iT/PAAL partnership, W+iT will also be creating an online resource packet to help parent artists and caregivers navigate the convention and the downtown Louisville. This document will be available via the SETC website.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns to share with the W+iT committee regarding the Family Room or other parent artist resources or programming, please contact committee chair Rowen Haigh: firstname.lastname@example.org.
